Starting a Whiskey Collection in 2024

Start or Grown Your Own Collection

As I think about the whiskeys I enjoyed most in 2023, I must say, I am even more excited for the whiskeys set to release in 2024.

This year is a perfect time to start or grow your own collection. I am a big proponent of starting a whiskey collection that you can admire everyday. Perhaps you already have a collection but are looking for tips and tricks on how to scale your inventory. Maybe you are interested in how to properly store your bottles to ensure optimal flavor and quality.

I want to kick off this Friday pour with a list of topics I believe to be important when starting or expanding your own whiskey collection.

8 Tips To Start Your Whiskey Collection

1. Understanding Whiskey Varieties and Regions

The world of whiskey is vast and varied. From the depths of Scotch whiskies to the sweet American Bourbons and the nuanced complexity of Japanese whiskies, each region offers its unique signature. Understanding these regional differences is key to building a diverse and rich collection. While I enjoy drinking bourbon, I am a sucker for a great Japanese whiskey.

2. Setting a Thoughtful Budget

A well-planned budget is essential. While the temptation of rare, vintage bottles is undeniable, there are countless exceptional whiskies available at various price points. A strategic approach involves balancing between splurging on a few high-end bottles and investing in a range of more affordable, yet high-quality options. Take it from me: price does not always equal flavor in the world of whiskey!

3. Age Statements and Maturation Process

Age is an important factor, but not the only one. The maturation process, including the type of barrels used, also plays a significant role in the flavor profile of the whiskey. Explore a mix of age statements and maturation styles to bring a comprehensive range to your collection.

When I first started collecting whiskey, I found myself looking for the oldest and most complex bottles on the shelf. Looking back, this was not the best approach for me. My advice is to grow your collection with readily available bottles, think Makers Mark and Wild Turkey, to understand the basic flavors of whiskey.

4. Proper Storage and Display

Storage conditions significantly affect a whiskey’s preservation. Ideal storage involves keeping bottles upright in a cool, stable environment away from direct sunlight. Additionally, how you display your collection can add to your home’s ambiance, making a personal statement.

If you live in a warm state, I would recommend storing your collection in a place with lots of cool ventilation. A simple tower fan can greatly help with cooling down a small area at a relatively low cost.

5. Embrace The Hunt

Expanding your collection is an adventure. Local liquor stores often harbor hidden gems, while online auctions and global whiskey fairs can be sources for exclusive finds.

In my opinion, the hunt you go through to find some of those sought after, allocated, bottles is part of the fun. Some of the most interesting conversations I have had about bourbon is usually waiting in a 2 hour line surrounded by other whiskey enthusiasts. Embrace the hunt as part of the collecting experience.

6. Community Engagement and Education

Joining whiskey clubs and participating in tastings not only fosters community but also enhances your understanding. Educational resources like seminars and workshops can deepen your knowledge, helping you make informed choices for your collection.

7. The Joy of Tasting and Sharing

Remember, the ultimate goal of collecting whiskey is to enjoy and share these splendid spirits. Organizing tasting sessions with friends or fellow collectors can be both enjoyable and enlightening, offering a chance to appreciate the stories behind each bottle.

8. Keeping Records and Notes

Maintaining detailed records of your collection, including tasting notes, purchase details, and personal impressions, adds another layer of enjoyment. This practice not only helps in managing your collection but also in tracking your taste preferences.
