Top 10 Best Bourbon of 2023

As I sit here and write this report, a few days after Christmas of 2023, I cannot help but ponder how many bottles of bourbon have been sold over the past 12 months. While it will be difficult to track the sheer number of bourbon bottles sold throughout the past year, I have put together what I believe to be the best bourbons of 2023.

I should mention that this list is, as with many bourbon choices, a very subjective one. Although not exhaustive, this list signifies what I believe to be the best bourbons of 2023. I chose certain bottles that I have personally tasted and enjoyed, in addition to using online sources such as Tasting Table and Breaking Bourbon to curate the full list below.

As always, please do remember that the best bourbon is the one you most enjoy.

1. Elijah Craig Barrel Proof A123Known for its bold, rich, and brassy character, with a popping protein and peaches profile couched in a piquant oakiness.

2. Four Gate Majestic Wood Series: Japanese Mizunara Oak: Aged for over seven years and finished in Japanese oak, it offers a rich, sweet undertone

3. Kentucky Peerless High Rye Bourbon: Known for its nose of seasoned oak, leather, and cedar, followed by the tastes of Maillard and smoke

4. Larceny Barrel Proof Bourbon Batch A123: A wheated bourbon bursting with flavor, offering a balance of classic rich bourbon notes and impeccable fruit notes​

5. Michter’s 10-Year Single Barrel Bourbon: Aged for a minimum of 10 years, known for its toffee, caramel, charred oak, maple syrup, and vanilla flavors​

6. Old Charter Oak Spanish Oak: A unique bourbon aged in imported Spanish Oak, known for its spicy and earthy taste

7. King of Kentucky: A 16-year-old bourbon that’s slightly lower in proof for better balance, known for its consistent high quality

8. Jefferson’s Tropics Aged in Humidity: Aged in severe heat and humidity, offering a rich, savory, fruit-filled flavor

9. 1792 Single Barrel: Showcases the quality and potential of 1792 bourbon, with a standout single barrel release

10. Four Roses 135th Anniversary Limited Edition Small Batch: Combines four batches, covering three different bourbon recipes, ranging from 12 to 25 years old​

I particularly enjoyed the 1792 Single Barrel. It’s a typical 1792 bourbon that you would expect from them.
